Gwendolyn's Vintage Sewing Class: Part One

Above: Gwendolyn's hand sewn button holes in three styles.

I just rediscovered a treasure I forgot that I had. Probably because I didn't realise it was a treasure when it was first given to me as I wasn't quite the avid sewer that I am now.

It is Gadgetman's paternal grandmother's personal book of sewing instructions. It doesn't have a great number of entries, but just enough for me to get a glimpse into the common methods of sewing in 1950s and the kinds of garments being made during this time. It also has me marvelling at the skill and the patience of these women as they did such fine sewing - in every sense of the word fine!

I hope you enjoy this as much I am - I'll be sure to upload some more entries in the future.

  1. Hi Kirrilly, thanks for calling by my blog, as you can see I am now your latest follower. I was going to suggest you read 'Foxs Lane' but I see you already do. I just love all the recycling you girls do.

  2. Thanks for dropping by - I feel such a novice at recycling compared to the likes of Foxs Lane, but seeing what everyone else does is both inspiring and motivating!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving such an encouraging comment on my blog. Seems we have a few things in common. :) Loving your re-purposing efforts thus far. if you like Kates work (fox's lane) and you have daughters you will probably also be inspired by this blog I found today http://littlecumulus.wordpress.com/

  4. I can't read Gwendolyn's notes :( How wonderful that they were passed on to someone who appreciates them though.

I acquired a number of sewing treasures from my grandmother-in-law too, I love these sort of things.

  5. Hey, mrserin - sorry about the small photo. I'm still getting used to this blog format as opposed to the other!
