My Creative Space

The dresses are finished! With a little hair tearing at the end - my two month old sewing machine started to disagree with the cotton thread I was using and delighted itself in snapping it at semi-regular intervals. Then it would not stitch properly until I had pacified it by doing a few stitches with polyester thread before resuming with cotton (and I'd love to hear any ideas of what is wrong beyond the cotton thread being the problem!). And, of course, it did all this misbehaving on the very last runs of ribbon where both the stitching and the finish point were visible.

Anyway - here they are. Finished and awaiting the family wedding in November.

Meanwhile, with the dresses finished my sewing machine has been put in the naughty corner while I do some scrapbooking for a while - in full view of the sewing machine, just to get revenge. Here's a little peak...

What's happening in your Creative Space this week?

  2. It always seems to be the way, doesn't it - my most perfect sewing is inevitably on the inside of a garment.

Could your upper tension be too tight? Cotton tends to snap easier than poly. Or possibly the cotton thread was too thick and getting caught in the eye of the needle? If it keeps up, I would ask your servicer - there might be a bit of sharp metal or something that you can't see.

  4. The dresses look great!

I had the same problem with some cotton thread recently and after much frustration changed thread (but still cotton I thought - now I'm looking at it and there's no label, but it looks like cotton?!?) and the problem went away immediately. I put it down to my Scottish roots, in that I bought the culprit for $1 or something, and figured that I should have known better!
