Which ribbon should I use?

I have made this lovely, light, apple green tunic/top. I now need to add some ribbon that will be stitched beneath the bodice and then wrap around to tie at the back. Without it the top hangs like a sack.

I have two different ribbons available and can't decide which one to use.

The first one has little purple and yellow flowers that co-ordinate with the embroidered flowers on the fabric. Using colour as well as the print on this ribbon will change the feel of the top and possibly limit what it can be worn with.

The second ribbon is much the same colour as the top with a woven check in it that provides good texture as well as co-ordination.

The original pattern had a wide contrasting band.

What do you think?

  1. Definately the flowers. I was thinking lavender even before I realised you had samples.

  2. The flowers definitely add a nice little contrast, while enhancing the fabric's theme. I'm just not sure how they'll look all tied up at the back...

  3. Unless I use the flowers at the front and the green at the back???

  4. I say go with the flowers too - if you're worried about how the reverse side of the ribbon would look in the bow at the back you could always sew a strip of the fabric or the green ribbon onto the wrong side (unless that'd make it too thick...)

  5. Hi Jackie - I think I will put the green ribbon on the back of the purple flowers for at least the part where the ribbon is used as a tie. It will finish it nicely and I don't think it will be too thick as both ribbons are quite light and flexible.

Will have to have you and the boys over for a meal at some stage - you can bring your stitching and the men can amuse the children while we get crafty :).
